The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid coupe powered by a high-performance electric motor in the front and a mid-mounted turbocharged 3-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol engine powering the rear wheels. The petrol engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic, while the electric motor is attached to a 2-stage automatic transmission. On electricity alone, the i8 can travel about 30 Km before the petrol engine has to intervene and recharge the batteries
